This painting represents an early 18th c. Italianate landscape featuring a shepherd leading his sheep and cattle to drink at the end of a long day. The shepherd stands in ankle-deep water, along with his livestock: 4 cows and 4 or 5 sheep. The 'contadino' is accompanied by his loyal sheepdog who is also enjoying a drink in the stream near his feet. The background includes a dark grove of trees, hills, a country home and a cloudy sky.
The painting is attributed to Franz Thomas Canton (born in Udine in Northern Italy) who was known there as Francesco Tommaso Cantone.
