Description
Year: 17th century
Size: 17.5" x 15.5"
Medium: Oil
Description: An exquisite oil painting from the 17th century by a French Old Master that shows St. Stephen being stoned. Superb and uncommon early illustration of the saint regarded as the first Christian martyr, or protomartyr. This image shows St. Stephen just before he was stoned to death by the Jewish authorities (on the left) for spreading Christianity. A youthful Saul of Tarsus, who would eventually become Paul the Apostle (St. Paul), witnesses the martyrdom to the right. The expertly relined item is in fair shape considering its age, though a clean might bring out more detail and tones. framed Dimensions: approximately 17.5" x 15.5" when framed.
