Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua region, Casas Grandes, Ramos Polychrome type, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A hand-built and stone-burnished pottery jar of relatively spherical form with a gently carinated midsection, a round but stable base, and a tall rim. The smooth exterior surfaces of the beige-hued upper body are adorned with a captivating register of spirals, linear motifs, and large serrations, all brought forth with applied red and black pigment. The most exceptional Casas Grandes vessels usually have Ramos-style designs, and examples such as this show how this style required great skill and aesthetic vision. Professional repair and restoration to body and rim, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines.
