Native American, southwestern United States, Four Corners region, southern Colorado Plateau, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), ca. 1030 to 1175 CE. A hand-built pottery bowl of the distinctive Wingate Red-on-Black type. The basin interior is filled with a single tendril spiraling on both ends, stripe-filled blocks, and dark steps covering repeating triangles. The bowl was created using the coil-and-scrape method then slip painted with mineral based pigments and then fired in an oxidizing atmosphere to achieve a red ground.
