Description
Iscayo Woman's Ceremonial Mantle, Early-Mid 19th C. Alpaca. Province of Pacajes, Department of La Paz. The most prized and identifiable of all the Aymara ceremonial textiles, the iscayo was worn by the T’alla, the wife of the Aymara Mallk (chieftain). Five narrow bands of reverse spun yarn (lluqui) are woven into each end of the piece. This shamanistic structure is believed to protect the wearer from bad spirits. This particular example was displayed in the exhibit, Weaving Traditions of Highland, Craft & Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles, 1978. Size: 4'0'' x 3'10'' (122 x 117 cm).
