Item Details
Description
Extremely rare WWI Fighting Observer uniform with bullion wings. Extremely Rare WWI Fighting Observer Uniform with Bullion Wing. The Fighting Observers were created as a hybrid of Observers that were also trained in air combat fighting techniques as well. Once their training was completed they headed to France to fight in WWI. However, on their way there, the war ended. They were designated to the 3rd Army Group and spent their time overseas in the occupation section. This explains the ribbon bar having only the victory ribbon and occupation ribbon and 2 strips on sleeve for 1 year overseas service. The jacket is lightly used and per Duncan from his observation of the jacket in person, that the Veteran returned from service with a ratty uniform, purchased a new one and moved the insignia over to the new jacket sometime in 1919. He then most likely wore it a handful of times post war but this is how the jacket stayed in such good condition. The Uniform was sent to Duncan to review in person, to authenticate the wing , he did pop some stitches on the wing to see the reverse side, and he fully agreed it was the real deal. There is plenty of evidence the wing has clearly been on the jacket for the amount of time Duncan estimated as well (1919). There are more Metal Fighting Observer wings located than Bullion. Currently only 2 other Fighting Observer Bullion wings have been located. These wings by themselves are extremely rare and valued, this is the only bullion wing known to exist on the veterans jacket. We have been unable to identify whom the jacket is for, but there were said to be only 17 fighting observers per the records we researched. Due to the rank insignia it could be possible some day to figure out which veteran it did belong to.
