What Do You See? Sidney Rothberg Coll. Part I
Freeman's | Hindman is proud to present the first two installments of the sale of The Collection of Sidney Rothberg on February 27 and 28.
"A lifelong Philadelphian, Mr. Rothberg was known for his expert eye and impeccable taste," says Head of Sale Alasdair Nichol. "He regularly attended Freeman's auction, so it is not only fitting, but also emotional, to see all these gems presented in the city he liked so much."
The event will be the occasion for collectors to discover important works by 19th and 20th century acclaimed artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Milton Avery, Alice Baber, and Wayne Thiebaud. The sale title is a direct homage to Mr. Rothberg's inquisitive mind since he would often playfully ask fellow art lovers for their interpretation of the works they admired together in a museum, gallery or auction house. To guide the collector through Mr. Rothberg's fertile mind and keen eye, Freeman's | Hindman Specialists have identified three distinct themes through which to view the unique temperament and impeccable taste of this important Philadelphia figure.
Said Saranne Rothberg, Mr. Rothberg's daughter: "It's important the world gets to see these treasures, love them and live with them. This sale, and the rest to follow, are exciting for me because, like my father, I want to know: What do You See?"
After a special exhibition in Paris, two highlights exhibitions in New York and a final event in Chicago, the full auction exhibition will be held in Philadelphia from February 16 to 26. See below for more information.
Please note that parts of the proceeds of the sale will be donated to support free programs helping to improve the lives of cancer patients, survivors, and their caregivers.
