In 1815, Captain James Riley survived a disastrous shipwreck on the American ship Commerce and was enslaved by Arabs in Morocco. Two years later, Riley published the first iteration of his experiences – a book that became an instant favorite to many readers. Author Archibald Robbins published an edition of Rileys Journal which included descriptions of his and his crews slavery.
