Description
1818 FAMOUS Journal of James Riley Shipwreck Brig Commerce Arabs Morocco Africa

“My aim [of this Narrative] has been merely to record, in plain and unvarnished language, scenes in which I was a principal actor, of real and heart-appalling distresses.”

– James Riley, Narrative

In 1815, Captain James Riley survived a disastrous shipwreck on the American ship Commerce and was enslaved by Arabs in Morocco. Two years later, Riley published the first iteration of his experiences – a book that became an instant favorite to many readers. Author Archibald Robbins published an edition of Rileys Journal which included descriptions of his and his crews slavery.
