Item Details
Description
Heavy iron skull chiseled with a central band depicting a procession with nobles on war elephants followed by attendants, cannon on a carriage pulled by oxen and a mounted warrior. Foliage bands above and below. Long diamond section top spike on radial toothed base, and adjustable nasal bar flanked by plume holders. See Pant, Vol. III pl. XVIII for a near-identical example dated to 1750. Decorated throughout in heavy silver overlay, about 100% complete and strong, on contrasting browned field. The base with a crimson cloth band overlaid by a gold-colored band. Early Indian armor was refurbished for special ceremonies, particularly visits by British nobility. The most notable of these was the Delhi Durbar of 1911.
