Description
Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A set of 2 cast-copper axe heads, each with a cylindrical socketing shaft and a thick midsection. The blades droop down to create a dense striking surface that could be used as a hybrid mace-axe depending on how it struck its target. Layers of naturally-occurring patina in hues of green, brown, russet, and azurite have formed across the exterior surfaces. Size of largest: 4.7" L x 1" W x 2.2" H (11.9 cm x 2.5 cm x 5.6 cm)
Provenance: private Everett, Massachusetts, USA collection, purchased October 15, 2014; ex-Broukal collection, United Kingdom, formed 1950s, thence by descent

Condition
One axe head with chipping to lower rim of socketing shaft; second axe is intact. Each axe head with abrasions and small nicks, otherwise in great condition. Nice patina throughout.
