Another Rare Quilt! c1800, linen and cotton blend, possibly homespun, wholecloth quilt with hand embroidery, measures 81 by 99 inches. The center has a hand in embroidered Quatrefoil with 4 more elements at each corner resembling a geometric pineapple shape, and whimsical butterflies above and below. It is surrounded by a frame of hand embroidery with similar pineapple shapes, scrolls, and crown motifs. The thread is a dark blue. It is hand pieced, hand embroidered, and hand quilted. There is an off white reverse, medium cotton batting, and the edge is finished knife edge style, by hand. It is in poor condition with edge wear, overall toning, small hole, loss to embroidery, and several spots. There are several period repairs, as well. Quilts from this time are very rare and often only found in historical societies and museums. The provenance of this textile is unknown but the T-shape could indicate it is from New England.
