Craftsman Arts & Crafts Auction

The Rago Arts and Auction Center will host its Craftsman Auction on May 17-18, 2003 at 12 Noon in Lambertville, New Jersey. Over 1000 lots of the finest representation of Arts and Crafts, Tile and Majolica will be offered. David Rago, well-known Arts and Crafts expert, Suzanne Perrault, known for her expertise in tiles, and Nicholas M. Dawes, highly respected for his knowledge of Majolica, have combined their talents to bring this incredible four-session auction.
An important collection of Newcomb College pottery highlights the auction, including a highly desirable early (1903) vase painted by Mary Butler, an impressive bulbous vase painted by M. Ross and a tall Newcomb College Transitional vase by Sadie Irvine, 1913.
Over 300 lots of exceptional pieces by George Ohr will be offered. Important pieces from Van Briggle include an Indian vase from the 1930's embossed with three different Indian Chief heads. The North Dakota School of Mines is well represented as well as several high quality Grueby pieces including a fine and tall vase by Wilhemina Post. Strong collections of Marblehead include an 8 1/4 cylindrical decorated vase and a rare tall Brouwer vase marked Ceramics Flame Company will be offered as well as pieces from Teco and Brouwer.
High-end tiles including fine works by Grueby and Overbeck will be featured as well as a fine selection of tiles from the Moravian Pottery. Altogether, there will be over 100 lots of tiles.
Because of the variety of excellent pottery we have available, our Sunday sale features George Ohr, Newcomb College, Majolica and high-end Rookwood along with other good quality pieces," notes David Rago.
Featured in the Majolica session are over 100 lots of Victorian majolica, including a private collection from Pennsylvania. English majolica includes several rare works by George Jones. There is an unusually strong collection of Majolica from the Chesapeake Pottery of Baltimore.
Also featured will be Galle, Loetz and Tiffany glass, lamps by Fulper, Heintz and Dirk Van Erp, Roycroft, Jarvie, Dirk Van Erp hammered metal and a strong collection of Roycroft.
