Quinn?s Auction Galleries and Waverly Rare Books are pleased to present two sales in celebration of Black History Month on Thursday, February 22, 2018. Part I, ?The Faces of Merton Simpson,? features a compilation of portraits, collages, and studies by artist, African art dealer, and activist Merton D. Simpson. Merton D. Simpson (1928-2013) was an abstract expressionist painter and a part of the Spiral Group, an African-American Artist collective that was passionate about social and political issues. This sale features portraits and collaged works of Jesse Jackson, Oprah Winfrey, Percy Sutton, Pablo Picasso, Spike Lee, Diana Ross, Maya Angelou, & Elton John, among others. Part II, ?The Johnson Collection of Black Americana & Ephemera,? is a single-collector sale of Black Americana collectibles, documents, books, photographs and all types of ephemera. Amassed by the Johnson family of New Jersey, the collection spans three centuries of black history in America.
