Art, Press & Illustrated Books

An auction rich in livres d'artiste by Giacometti, Man Ray, Hans Erni and Picasso; rare catalogues raisonnés and monographs; works on decorative arts and architecture; large runs of important art journals; illustrated classics, manuscript reference; and a large private collection of works illustrated by Rockwell Kent. Of special note are the catalogue of the first separate American exhibition of Picasso's mural Guernica, in 1939, with a signed color drawing by the artist on the cover; an archive of artists' correspondence with Lloyd Goodrich, former director of the Whitney Museum; and illustrations by Maurice Sendak, including a five-panel storyboard for a television commercial that won a Clio award. Also featured is a collection of illustrated books from the library of Dr. Elliott Mendenhall, Jr., who focused on the great illustrators of the early 20th century. Artists include Edmund Dulac, Warwick Goble, Willy Pogàny, Charles and W. Heath Robinson, Jessie Willcox Smith, Hugh Thomson, and his favorite, Arthur Rackham, who is represented by over 30 works. Many of the books are in fine bindings by Bayntun, Rivière.
