Prehistoric Artifact Auction - Steve Elwood

We are very pleased to offer the Prehistoric Artifact Collection of Steve Elwood. All items in this sale are from the Elwood collection. During the past decade, Steve amassed a very fine and varied collection of artifacts. His acquisition of the well known (and documented) Dave Harvey Collection brought with it some superb flint pieces, including one of the finest Knife River Clovis Points known. Steve was able to acquire the best of two lesser known collections, those of Paul Kline and Fred Delavan. You?ll see these names throughout the catalog, and like us, we?re sure you will be impressed with the quality of these older (1940?s-1960?s) collections - as well as the degree of documentation that accompanies them. Many of the pieces in this auction can be traced back to the finder. There are some remarkable offerings in this auction. Museum quality items include a Monolithic Axe that Steve acquired from Tommy Beutell, a remarkable Hopewell Monitor Pipe, as well as Dr. T. Hugh Young?s Hopewell Frog Effigy Pipe. It is remarkably rare to see a Monolithic Axe offered to the public (we know of no other unquestionable examples). Most sources believe there are fewer than 50 authentic Monolithic Axes in existence. It is equally rare to see a documented Hopewell Effigy Pipe presented to the public for acquisition. Few comparable examples exist, especially in private hands. A number of quality Axes are included in the auction, notably a Mills County style Axe from the Council Bluffs Cache (found 1884). Also of note, the fabulous Joe Shurtleff Caddo Point frame is being dispersed in this sale. Acquired by Dave Harvey in 1982, it is a well known collection of very fine Hayes, Agees and other Caddo Points (including a crystal Quartz Hayes). From top to bottom, an exceptional offering of fine relics.
