Friedlander Collection | Colin McCahon

The late Marti Friedlander (1928 - 2016) brought an immigrant's perspective on her adopted country, holding a mirror up to New Zealanders so as we could better see and appreciate ourselves and our country. Marti and her husband Gerrard together collected works by artists whom she had a relationship with, many of whom she photographed for the landmark publication Contemporary New Zealand Painters A - M by Jim Barr and Mary Barr. The auction contains several of these photographs as well as images for the planned sequel edition which was never published. Colin McCahon is widely regarded as this country's most important artist. 2019 marks the centenary anniversary of the artist's birth and Art+Object's auction takes place amidst celebratory exhibitions, publications and events around the country. This auction is the first of its kind, devoted solely to Colin McCahon's practice. The publication includes writing by Bridget Hackshaw, Peter Simpson, Laurence Simmons, Greg O'Brien, Linda Tyler and more. The catalogue is headlined by the artist's magnificent Elias will he come will he come to save him (1959), from a private European collection. This painting was last seen in New Zealand as part of the A Question of Faith exhibition nearly twenty years ago. It is the most significant McCahon painting to come on the auction market since The Canoe Tainui (1969) in 2016.
