Summer Fine and Decorative Art

An historically significant Tiffany ewer that was presented to Abraham Lincoln on the event of his first inauguration in 1861 will be one of the highlights offered at Cowan's Spring Fine and Decorative Art Auction. Neither the White House nor Tiffany's recorded the names of the presenters of this piece, and its mysterious origins contribute to its appeal and rarity. Other decorative pieces include a 19th-century oil painting featuring Tom Molineaux, a Virginia slave who reportedly gained his freedom boxing for his plantation owner. An ornate Midwestern Aesthetic Movement bedroom suite consisting of a bed, armoire, dresser and washstand, was likely made for newlyweds circa 1870-80, delicately carved with symbols of hopeful fecundity. Also featured are the last five paintings from a rare collection by the prominent Kentucky artist Paul Sawyier, originally gifted to and owned by Mary "Mayme" Bull, to whom Sawyier was engaged but never married. Cowan's will be offering more than 450 lots in addition to these, ranging from the practical to the ornate. There are many folk art pieces from a de-commissioned Odd Fellows hall, plus folk art dolls, tramp art, items painted by Peter Hunt, and much more. Furniture ranges from Shaker cupboards to an ornate walnut casapanca and Louis XV-style vitrine cabinet, firescreen and settee; an antler desk to a mid-20th century retractable one; the simple lines of Chinese sang de boeuf jars to Sevres-style porcelain urns and Rookwood faience pieces; portraits large and small; hooked rugs and "Persian" rugs; even a Steinway baby grand piano. The sale also includes a number of collectible vehicles: Ford 1919 Model T delivery truck, 1923 touring sedan, 1926 roadster, 1930 Model A coupe, MG 1953 "Top Dog" convertible, 1964 Lincoln Continental Convertible, 1965 Mustang convertible, and an Indian Moped and a German MZ 1966 Motorcyle with sidecar. Certainly something for every collection!
