Bibliophile Sale

As one has come to expect, Bloomsbury's Bibliophile sales embrace a wide variety of subject matter, a wide spectrum of prices and some choice items; the sale on 16th July is no exception. In the English Literature section is a first edition in book form of William Makepeace Thackeray's Vanity Fair (lot 116) and it has an estimate of £300-400. A rare first American edition, presentation copy of JA McNiell Whistler's The Gentle Art of Making Enemies edited by Sheridan Ford(lot 138) is estimated £300-400. Bloomsbury is renowned for being the home for Modern First Editions and this sale offers an interesting series of correspondence from Leslie Charteris (author, screenwriter and creator of The Saint) with an estimate of £300-400 (lot 155). Amongst the Graham Greene titles is a first edition of The New House (lot 161) number 36 of 60 copies estimated £1000-1500. One of the highlights must be the excellent collection of correspondence and original manuscript material from Iris Murdoch (lot 207) which is expected to fetch £800-1200. The sale has over 20 lots pertaining to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, including lot 268 a very good first edition copy of The Hound of the Baskervilles (estimated £750-1000). Amongst the 34 lots of Ian Fleming titles, are two first editions of Moonraker (lots 300-301) each expected to fetch between £1500-2000. However it is The Hobbit, or, There and Back Again by JRR Tolkien (lot 506) which has an estimate of £3000-3500. This is a first edition, second impression and is thus the first to have colour plates and a print run of 2300 of which 423 perished in a fire in 1940.
