Amazing Landscape Photography from K2 to the Matterhorn

AMAZING LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY from K2 to the Matterhorn by Vittorio Sella. Before Ansel Adams became the leading outdoor photographer in the world, Vittorio Sella (1859-1943) was acclaimed worldwide for his Landscape views. Based in Boston, the Appalachian Mountain Club was founded in 1876 & is Americas oldest nonprofit & conservation organization. Their co-founder, Charles Fay’s association with the Italian Alpine Club and the Sella family led to 1893 purchase by the AMC of Vittoria Sella’s prize winning 500 print Italian exhibition. Over the next 20 years the AMC received Sella exhibition from all of his series.

Andrew Smith Gallery Photography Auctions LLC is pleased to present this benefit NO RESERVE auction, containing 550 original exhibition prints; highlights include over 40 multi-plate panorama views & rare silver gelatin & collodion views of K2, Kangchenjunga & the Himalayas--in 297 lots. The collection is being sold by the Appalachian Mountain Club to directly benefit the Appalachian Mountain Club Trails Protection Fund, Conservation Research & Climate Action, & the Modernization & Preservation of the AMC Library & Archives.

Sella photographed extensively in the Alps of Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Germany & France from the 1870s on. In 1889 & 1890 Sella made two of his three expeditions to the Caucasus working in Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan & Armenia. In 1897 he joined the Duke of the Abruzzi to the American Canadian, Alaskan Yukon border to climb Mt. Saint Elias. In 1899 he joined legendary climber Douglas Freshfield to finish mapping the Himalayan Kangchenjunga area, in the area of India Sikkim, Nepal, Bhuton, Tibet & China. In 1906 Sella accompanied The Duke of the Abruzzi to the Rwenzori, the headwaters of the Nile in Uganda & the DRC. In 1909 Sella, with the Duke of the Abruzzi, went to climb K2 in the Himalayan Karakoram on the border of China, India & Pakistan. He photographed from over 22,000 ft.
