Fine Books and Manuscripts

Our Fine Books and Manuscripts auction on 17 June in New York begins with Magic, that is, a private collection of magic books and manuscripts led by Harry Houdini's heavily annotated typescript draft for his last literary work, Magician Among the Spirits, once in the Milbourne Christopher collection. Following, from different private collections, are a fine first edition of Gulliver's Travels, Teerink A, in a contemporary binding, a real auction rarity, as well as a magic book of another kind, a first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, also in exemplary condition. A distinguished section of Americana boasts two more rarities: Palafox de Mendoza's Virtudes des Indio, Bishop Palafox's defense of the Puebla Indians to the Spanish crown; and James Lyon's American songbook Urania, the 1761 first issue, complete, of the first American-born music book published in America, and containing the first appearance in America of the tune for "America (My Country Tis of Thee)."
