American Furniture, Folk & Decorative Arts II

Hindman's September 14-15 American Furniture, Folk and Decorative Arts auction includes an impressive array of material showcasing the breadth of the category. The sale features fine examples of William and Mary, Queen Anne, Chippendale and Federal furniture, portrait, landscape, still life and nautical paintings, as well as sculpture, silver, glass, stoneware, folk portraiture, clocks and textiles. Session one (lots 1001-1304) showcases the nautical-themed collection of legendary dealer Norm Flayderman (lots 1167-1233). Highlights from Flayderman’s collection include a rare pair of eagle, shield and seal of Cincinnati carved ship's gangway boards likely from the USS Cincinnati (1892), a seascape painting attributed to Charles Henry Seaforth, a carved steers horn drinking cup with fraternal symbols and China Trade paintings, to name a few. Additionally, the Estate of Joanne Wojtusiak of Cornwall Bridge, Connecticut, features a pair of William Matthew Prior portraits and other folk art. The session also includes two exceptional Andrew Clemens sand bottles; a Henry Merwin Shrady bronze of Washington at Valley Forge; a portrait of Ira Frederick Aldridge, the African-American Shakespearean actor, playwright and abolitionist; an early portrait of Thomas Jefferson; a portrait of James DeLong attributed to Ammi Phillips; a Kentucky State Agricultural coin silver presentation pitcher; and 18th Century needlework embroidered schoolgirls' samplers. Session two (lots 1305-1582) features folk art by noted artists such as Mattie Lou O'Kelley, Howard Finster, LeRoy Archuleta and Shields Landon Jones; stoneware jugs, crocks and water coolers, including a rare Carolina "Colored Republicing Club" cooler; carved folk art and decoys; weathervanes, advertising and tools; Shaker furniture and painted country furniture; and quilts and coverlets.
