Horses & Gauchos - Past to Present
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Artemis Gallery is paying tribute to one of the most important contributions of the Spaniards to the Americas, the introduction of the horse and the rise of the gaucho. This week's auction will feature the impressive collection of David Irving, lifelong collector from Denver, CO which includes a plethora of items used by gauchos in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and beyond - bridles, riding crops, spurs, rastra belts, facon knives, stirrups, rebenques whips, branding irons, riding boots, even a saddle and saddle blanket. Complementing this collection are works of fine art and material culture that capture the romance of the cowboy and the rancher's way of life, prompting us to envision gauchos moving cattle toward the corrals as the animals kick up dust from the earth and the sun glows early in the morning. Travel back to a time when gauchos were revered for their skills, bravery, and deep respect for the horse, an animal that was essential for their livelihood and survival.
