Estate Art Collections

On November 12th, the art collections from three prominent, deceased gentlemen will be sold in a major auction in which the vast majority of original works of art will be sold without minimum reserve. The auction features works from world-renowned artists including Picasso, Chagall, Degas, Utrillo, de Kooning, Warhol, and other artists. The work by Picasso in the auction is of particular note in that in addition to his Le Berger (the Sheppard)- a lovely watercolor over linocut- and several drawings, there are two magnificent works the artist executed in glass in a little-known technique referred to as Les Gemmaux. In the early 1950s, works by Cocteau, Braque, and Picasso were being exhibited whereby thousands of tiny colored glass fragments were permanently joined in a heated bath of clear enamel to create stunningly beautiful pictures. It wasn't long before Picasso emerged as the true master of this form, written about in publications including Time Magazine, and exhibited in museums including NYC's Metropolitan Museum of Art. The two Picasso Gemmaux in the auction are believed to be the first works of this kind to appear in a major art auction. One of the two is called l'Arelquin (the Harlequin) while the other was the artist's vision of the famed Parisian Cathedral, Notre Dame. So important is this latter work, that the committee overseeing the re-building of Notre Dame following its epic fire, has indicated that if the opportunity arose, it would proudly hang this magnificent work within the soon-to-open restored landmark. From this same estate comes original works including Raoul Dufy's equestrian Ascot, Kees Van Dongen's Kermese, and Marc Chagall's doubled-sided Peintre a son Chevalet. However, the period of art shifts to the mid-twentieth century with the inclusion of Willem de Kooning's 1963 painting on newsprint. The Abstract Expressionist created this powerful work which, notably, comes from the estate of legendary Jazz musician, Gerry Mulligan.
