The INUIT Art Sale
Pridham's Auctions & Appraisals is pleased to present our inaugural Inuit Art sale. This diverse offering is made up of two major collections along with other quality inclusions. The Farley collection originates from Ottawa and represents the core collection of this sale. Assembled over a 40-year span, it includes good and unusual carved stones along with a large selection of quality marine material pieces. The Geurts collection, also from Ottawa, is the other foundational collection in the sale. Primarily self-collected, this compilation shows us some well listed artists with diverse subject matter. Other inclusions originate from Montreal, Ottawa, and Kingston (Ontario, Canada).
The traditional way of life is a common theme with Inuit art. Through carvings and printed art, Inuit artists have shown us how their ancestors lived and have subsequently kept their history alive. This visual history shows us how this ancient culture adapted and survived one of the harshest climates on earth. Like other Indigenous Peoples of Canada, the Inuit have great respect for their natural surroundings and the creatures that they share the land with, providing a source of food and warmth in the bitterly long winters found in the great north. Powerful polar bears, seals, caribou, wolves, and owls and just some of the magnificent creatures represented in sculpture and drawings. The Shaman and Sedna are both spiritual representations found throughout the Inuit culture. The Shaman, in his various iterations, going underwater to appease the upset Sedna, therefore restoring the harmony of the Inuit world.
We hope you join us as we present this fascinating sale of culture and art.
