20th Century Abstraction / Latin American Art
NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle will present an auction of 20th Century Abstraction on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at 11am. The sale showcases abstract art spanning the 1940s through the end of the century and will include paintings, drawings, sculpture and prints. From the American Abstract Expressionists, as well as several prototypical artists that predated them, the auction documents the global evolution of abstraction within and beyond the fabled New York School; including Color Field artists, hard-edge abstraction, CoBrA Group and much more.
Jimmy Ernst
The son of Surrealist Max Ernst, Jimmy Ernst (1920-1984) was a member of the Irascibles, along with Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko and many others. Ernst would further explore avant-garde art and music while working as the Director of Peggy Guggenheim’s Art of this Century Gallery. From 1965, Poet’s Sleep is a prime example of the influence Gothic architecture had on Ernst’s work; intricate lines intersect, floating above vibrant fields of red and blue (lot 19).
Syd Solomon
World War II veteran Syd Solomon (1917-2004) designed camouflage for the military, and ran reconnaissance flights, both of which influenced his abstract painting techniques. A boldly colored work on canvas from 1988-89, Coast Event evokes the environment of Solomon’s native Sarasota locale. Solomon was fascinated by the ecology of the nearby Gulf of Mexico, drawing inspiration from the famed white sands of his beach community (lot 68).
Sorel Etrog
One of Canada’s greatest sculptors, Sorel Etrog (1933-2014) was best known for his curvaceous abstract bronze forms. Represented here with two stylized bronzes, the supple design showcases Etrog’s undulating shapes with towering presence (lot 58).
