The sale highlights the development of natural history as a science into the modern conservation and ecological movements. A sampling includes rare titles by Jack London, Henry David Thoreau, and Ernest Callenbach, as well as several lavishly illustrated ornithological works such as Buller?s History of the Birds of New Zealand, drawn largely from the private library of collector Shawn Donnille. The following section of rare books and manuscripts features 36 lots of Albert Einstein?s most important writings, and letters from Queen Elizabeth II, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Marie Antoinette. A fine press section at the end includes a fine exemplar of the Kelmscott Press, and 25 lots representing a large portion of the history of the Bohemian Club, with every Grove Play from 1907-2013 and an extensive archive of ephemeral materials from the club.
