The William Dana Lippman Collection
The William Dana Lippman Collection
Splendor of American Furniture | Bonhams Skinner
Bonhams Skinner is pleased to present the personal collection of William Dana Lippman. This remarkable collection speaks to a true gentleman collector, a legendary innovator in Californian public finance, and a decorative arts autodidact. Lippman's exemplary appreciation of beauty and history drove a lifetime of exploration and acquisition resulting in the astounding collection now brought to auction.
Lippman's Rhode Island origins shaped his passion for high-style American furniture, with his high standards and connoisseurship reflected in examples primarily from New England, New York, and Philadelphia. This keen interest took him to museums, galleries and exhibits across the United States and abroad, ever refining his eye for unparalleled quality and detail. A dedicated 'student' of the arts, he was eager to absorb knowledge, engage in the hunt, and equally willing to share his expertise with interested parties. Lippman took great pride in opening the doors of his Holmby Hills, California, home to enable others to experience and study his collection, bringing life to the expression of "living with antiques".
The Lippman home was decorated and adorned with the best available examples of early American furniture and decorative arts, reflecting his deep sense of patriotism. Upon entering the foyer, guests were immediately introduced to commensurately important pieces; from a fine Providence block-and-shell-carved kneehole bureau to a luminous painting of Gloucester harbour by Fitz Henry Lane and an outstanding thick pile Pinwheel Kazak with rich natural dyes, the audience was enraptured by the magnificence of the collection, Lippman's knowledge and generosity of spirit.
