GUERNSEYS-MOVIE STAR NEWS- DAY 2

Movie Star News was founded in 1938 by Irving Klaw after his book store in lower Manhattan failed to thrive. Klaw noticed early in his first endeavor that customers were tearing the pictures of their favorite movie stars out of the magazines in the store. He decided to change his direction. The idea of Movie Star News was born. Klaw contacted the movie studios, many of which were then located in New York City, about purchasing the negatives. Over the next 50 years, Movie Star News purchased millions of images from them. In the early 1940's the entrepreneurial Klaw, an amateur photographer, developed a fascination with pin-up photography. Toward the end of the decade, he would meet Bettie Page. Working with Irving Klaw and his sister, Paula Klaw, Bettie Page would unknnowingly become the Queen of the Pin-Ups. This first live auction offers a brief introduction into the archives of Movie Star News and into the Irving Klaw archives. The collection is a virtual history of the mysterious Bettie Page and encompasses early 1950's pin-up photography as a whole. Rare one of a kind images, some never before seen, together with their negatives and other movie memorabilia will be on the auction block in this, Session II. The negatives represented in this auction are all from the Movie Star News Archives. They were obtained, for the most part, directly from the studios . Many are hand numbered in India ink. The negatives and the entire archives were preserved carefully and diligently over the last 75 years and are in very good to excellent condition. This auction is a rare opportunity to purchase items from the collection of this New York City landmark, the favorite of Hollywood collectors for decades!!
