Craftsman Auctions - David Rago & Jerry Cohen

David Rago Auctions will present its Craftsman Auction to be held on January 24-25, 2003 starting noon each day. The high-end two session sale features close to 1000 lots of many important pieces of art pottery, tiles and select mission furniture.

A showstopper in the auction will be a Gustav Stickley desk, designed by Harvey Ellis, c. 1903-04. This desk was never placed in general production and in the last twenty years, only two others like have been found. The desk is unique in several ways. For one, the hardware was designed specifically for this piece and does not show up on other Stickley designs. Another unique feature is that this is the only desk Stickley made that is flanked by two full sections of bookcase. The large Ellis arch at the base, the lighter thickness of the oak used in the frame of the piece, the Ellis design square leaded panels at the top of the doors, and the long overhang are all trademark Ellis pieces. The last piece to surface was in 1998 and sold at David Rago Auctions for $60,000. This desk is estimated at $60,000-$80,000. The finish is original and the color is darker and richer than on other examples of this desk.

George Ohr is also well represented and includes an unusual asymmetrical pitcher with a pinched, cut-out handle and pinched rim, covered in a rare matte amber, raspberry and green mottled glaze and carries a script signature. Highlighting the auction are many important pieces of Newcomb College pottery, including an early pear-shaped vase carved by Sabrina Wells with large blue blossoms and green leaves on an ivory and light blue ground.

An amazing selection of tiles include Grueby, California and European by Johann von Schwartz, and a large Rookwood Scenic Vellum signed plaque painted by E.T. Hurley, titled "The Birches," and mounted in its original frame.
