August 28th Photography Auction

George Cruger was Publications Manager of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts for many years. He held a secondary position with VMFA as assistant curator of photographs, which gave him the opportunity to research photographic works, recommend additions to the collections, and form exhibitions, notably the large group show Portraits: Faces of the ‘80s in 1987. Cruger’s personal collection is an array of pieces across the centuries and around the globe. Notable 19th and early-mid 20th century pieces from photographers: Edward Weston, William Christenberry, Mary Ellen Mark, Roger Mertin, Grancel Fitz, Nikolas Muray and Geoff Winningham. Additionally his Contemporary collection of works made since 1990, include prints by Edith Maria Calvo (Italy); Chan Chao (Burma); Kahn + Selesnick (England, U.S.); Hiroshi Watanabe (Japan); and Claudio Cambon, Lori Nix, and Marla Rutherford (U.S.). His support of the Richmond artist’s community is reflected in the pieces by noted artist Myron Helfgott, Janet Decover, and current Dean of VCU Arts and founding board member of 1708 gallery, Joe Seipel. In a statement from his gallery show at Main Art Gallery in 2008 he stated, “Nor have I been guided by any overarching principle or shrewd strategy. The main impulse guiding me has been that I like looking at photographs, and these pictures, acquired over a long period with limited financial resources, represent many of the things I like about that activity. It’s really that simple.”
