INUIT ART & FIRST NATIONS ART

Walker’s is pleased to present its seventh major sale of Inuit art, November 15, 2014 in Ottawa. This is the third anniversary of our company’s commitment to the Inuit art market. We are very proud of our achievements so far, and as always are tremendously grateful to our consignors and to the collectors who support our efforts. We are pleased and proud to be able to present fine Inuit works from across the Arctic. These include a trove of very special carvings dating from the earliest period of Inuit art: 1949-1953. They were purchased from the very first exhibitions of Inuit art held at the Canadian Guild of Crafts in Montreal. Foremost among these is the superb Seated Mother and Child by Sheokjuk Oqutaq, but there are many other treasures from this period. Another special group of spirit and transformation sculptures dates from Cape Dorset in the early 1960s. Carved by Kiugak Ashoona and others, they represent a brief but particularly fertile period in the history of art making in this community. Other highlights include an important early work by Karoo Ashevak, an outstanding and moving Tiktak, a splendid Latcholassie, great sculptures by Judas Ullulaq and Miriam Qiyuk, and a fine collection of sculptures by the Baker Lake master, Barnabus Arnasungaaq. We have a particularly fine collection of miniatures this fall. Miniature and small-scale works inhabit a special place in the world of Inuit art. For some, they are an entrée into the field; for others, they are a collecting passion. To round things out we are offering an important ceremonial beaded amautiq made and worn by the respected Baker Lake elder Martha Talerook; a fine collection of prints and drawings; and a group of spectacular argillite works dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Thanks once again to our supporters. We always welcome your questions, comments and suggestions. Ingo Hessel Head, Inuit Art ingo@walkersauctions.com 613-818-2100 (direct line)
