Coins & Medals

Welcome to our first Coins & Medal auction of 2015. With over 400 lots, this sale features one of our largest selections of Gold Sovereigns and Half-Sovereigns, particularly those of the Victorian era. There are several notable items in our military section, including Lot 392; this WWII Royal Air Force group of five medals awarded to 154681 Flying Officer John Trevor Lambourne, offers a rare and thought-provoking insight into World War II; particularly as the lot includes the Flying Log Book which documents Lambourne?s training and involvement in the Bombing in Dresden on the 13th February 1945. We also have three Gallantry Military Medal Groups within this section of the sale - Lot 366, 367 and 368. From the medals section, we are delighted to offer Lot 404. This Baronet?s Badge in gold and enamel, engraved to the reverse ?Worthington-Evans of Colchester 1916?. The baronet?s badge takes precedence over all Orders worn around the neck with the exception of the Order of Merit. Sir Worthington Laming Worthington-Evans, 1st Baronet GBE, PC, was a Conservative politician, serving under David Lloyd George's coalition and Stanley Baldwin governments. Highlights from our token section includes: Lot 340, a Convict Love Token from 1826. Although perhaps not the most valuable of lots it provides us with a rare piece of social history, as the erased Penny Flan is stipple engraved with a message from the convict to his loved one: - ?Dear Mary think on me for I am many a mile from thee?. Finally, for those with an interest in the renowned gold and silversmith Stuart Devlin may we draw your attention to Lot 356. This cased set of six gold medals of the Prime Ministers of Great Britain by Gerald Benney and Stuart Devlin, is typical of the commemorative medallions Devlin was commissioned to design for countries throughout the world, including Singapore, Malaysia and the Cayman Islands.
