James C. Harrison (1925-1990) Art at Auction
James C. Harrison was born in Detroit, Michigan, on November 27, 1925. In 1943 he graduated from Cass Technical High School in Detroit with a degree in commercial art. Having little formal education in art, after attending Cranbrook Academy of Art and Olivet College for only a single term each, he consciously became a self-taught artist. Harrison moved to New York in 1950 as an aspiring artist, and worked as a color mixer for a textile manufacturer to support himself. From the late 50s to the 1970s he participated in a large number of group exhibitions, before gaining recognition of his own in the 1980s. By 1983 he had his first one-man exhibition at A Place Apart Gallery in Brooklyn, New York, and in 1987 the LedisFlam Gallery presented his solo exhibition, ?Forty Year Retrospective?. He worked in a variety of mediums, and his work, while always evolving, was consistently dramatic, largely colorful, and even abstract. Mr. Harrison passed away in 1990 in Brooklyn, New York. The following art works are all directly from the artist's estate.
