Coins & Medals

In the year of the bi-centenary of the Battle of Waterloo, Fellows is delighted to offer Lot 402 ? a Waterloo medal, named to ?Cornet The Hon. John Massy, 1st Royal Dragoons.? The honourable John Massy (1795-1848) enrolled in the army in 1814 and served under Captain Henry Rt. Carden?s No.3 or ?B? troop at the Battle of Waterloo on the 18th of June, 1815. Massy received half pay from 1826 until he was brevetted the rank of Lieutenant Colonel on the birth of the Prince of Wales on November 23rd, 1841 as sited in The Gentleman?s Magazine in July 1848. Also included in our military section are two campaign medals for the Crimea War of 1854-56 against Russia. Lot 403 is named to ?Pte James Anderson. 79th Foot? and Lot 404 has three clasps Balaklava, Inkermann, Sebastopol, impressed to ?W. White. 6th Dragoons.? The medal is notable for its unusually ornate clasps which form an oak leaf with an acorn at each end; the swivelling suspender is also unique to the Crimea Medal. Interestingly, included within Lot 393 is a miniature Crimea Medal named to ?Lieut. I. E. Doran. R.N?. Highlights from our medallion section include an interesting collection of bronze medals issued by The British Art Medal Society (BAMS) (Lot 371 ? 386). Over the last 30 years, the society has commissioned work by many distinguished artists, including medallist and coin designer Ron Dutton, jeweller Jacqueline Stieger, but perhaps most notably contemporary sculptor Lynn Chadwick, whose work can be seen in Lot 379 - Diamond 1983, struck bronze medal with diamond-headed fi gure and diamond head to the reverse. Finally, for those with an interest in Masonic regalia we have a large collection relating to Richard Bentinck Boyle, 9th Earl of Shannon (1924-2013) - he was the longest serving Provincial Grand Master of Surrey. The collection includes a wide variety of aprons, collars and a Knights Templar mantle (Lot 506-510).
