Introducing Sculpture and Furniture Design by Gene Caples (1935-2015) Online Only Auction Open For Bidding Now through Wednesday, April 20th Gene Caples was a quietly accomplished and successful designer and craftsman who worked in Kansas City in the 1960s. He attended the Kansas City Art Institute, earning his Bachelors of Fine Arts in Industrial Design in 1959. In 1963 he was accepted to the legendary Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Michigan where he worked with Julius Schmidt, earning his Masters of Fine Art in Sculpture in 1965. By doing so he joined Cranbrook's astounding list of alumni that includes Harry Bertoia, Charles Eames, Ray Eames, Florence Knoll and Ero Saarinen, just to name a few. Like his more well-known fellow alumni, Gene designed furniture and worked in bronze throughout the 1960s. Later in life, he joined the Kansas City Woodworker's Guild, founded in part by fellow Kansas City designer Clarence Teed. It was in this late 20th century time frame that he designed and crafted some of the more contemporary pieces you'll see here. We've combined a few classic mid-century commercially designed pieces and some complimentary original art with Gene's Bronze Sculpture and Furniture designs, along with some examples from his contemporaries and friends to create a fun and well-rounded offering of Art and Design. This auction also includes a few hard-edge paintings by Edward Lewis(1914-1992). - There will be no physical auction, all bidding will take place online only. - The auction will be open for bidding April 1st to April 20th when each lot in the auction crosses the virtual Auction Block for a live Internet bidding competition. This final bidding competition begins on April 20th with the first lot. - *Note, competition from live telephone bidders and other live Internet bidding platforms may display as "Competing Bidder" during the final bidding.
