Provenance/Additional Info:These textiles were used as wraparound skirts; as prestige objects and as the most important part of the dowry. Ntchaks are made of raffia from the raffia palm tree. It is tough material which is difficult to work with. It is soaked for weeks, then it is kneaded, in order to soften the threads. This lengthy process, as well as the weaving was done by men - whereas the embroidery and other sorts of embellishments were done by women. The making of a Ntchak this size could take months!
