(British, 1727-1788) Entitled THE MARKET CART | Oil on canvas | Brass artist tag on frame "The Market Cart, Painted by Thomas Gainsborough, R.A. 1727-1788" | Old gallery label verso on upper stretcher bar | Housed in a remarkable antique ornate gold gilt gesso wood frame | Approx. Dimensions: Image: 29" H x 25" W; Frame: 44" H x 38" W | Provenance: Ex-Collection Grove City College, PA; bequeathed by Mr. and Mrs. J. Howard Pew, Ardmore, PA; ex-collection F.H. Robinson, England | Attributed to Gainsborough by William Roberts (per label), see Literature | The painting depicts a horse drawn cart, with two girls sat aboard, traveling along a woodland path. It was first exhibited at Gainsborough's own home in Pall Mall in 1786. He would later add a figure of a woodman gathering bundles of wood in 1787.
