Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A cast-bronze mace head of a ceremonial form with six cruciform decorations connected by their lateral arms that course around the circumference. The spherical beater head rests between two cylindrical socketing shafts lined with protruding rings meant to more efficiently hold the ties used to secure it to a wooden shaft. Thick layers of green and light brown patina have formed across the surfaces and make for an attractive presentation. This mace head was perhaps ceremonial in use as typical, battle-ready mace heads were not adorned with the cross-shaped details shown here. Size: 2.4" W x 3.625" H (6.1 cm x 9.2 cm)

Condition
Chips to rims of both ends of socketing shaft, with heavy encrustations across surfaces. Nice earthen deposits and great patina throughout.
