**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built redware pottery bowl of an intriguing avian form that rests upon three hollow rattle legs. The ovoid vessel features a deep basin flanked with a pair of semicircular wings, a narrow head with petite eyes and an open beak, and a tab-shaped tail on the opposite side. The wings are embellished with fineline zigzags indicative of feathers. Size: 8.75" W x 3.3" H (22.2 cm x 8.4 cm)
Provenance: private Ventura County, California, USA collection, acquired in the 1990-2000

Condition
Repaired from a few large pieces, with restoration to head, and resurfacing with overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and fading to original pigment, with small nicks to wings, tail, body, and legs, and a few stable hairline fissures. Nice remains of original pigmentation throughout.
