Description
**First Time At Auction**
North America, United States, New Orleans Louisiana, ca. 1916. What a risque piece of history! This is a printed paper directory of the female prostitutes and brothels of the New Orleans' red-light district known as Storyville. The booklet is small, and could be discreetly carried in a pocket. The cover is innocently titled, "BLUE BOOK" with a nouveau style crest below. Printed on the first page is a masked lady coyly showing off her ankles to advertise a French style ball at a gentleman's club. Photographs of richly furnished parlors, boudoirs, and dens from a brothel are included with captions such as: "if seeing is believing, then you can judge for yourself..." The book also contains advertisements and offers for regular services and products, such as jewelers, champagne, and restaurants. "Blue Books" were sold at places frequented by men; saloons, barbershops, and even as they stepped off the train! These tour guides encouraged visitors to experience the red-light district, which was loosely regulated by the city and helped New Orleans gain the reputation of a place of indulgence and immorality. Size: 5.5" L x 4.25" W (14 cm x 10.8 cm)
Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
