Description

Oversize, vintage hand-colored foldout plate from The Zoology of New York or The New York Fauna, by James E. De Kay, published 1842-44. The Virginian Peltranda, otherwise known as green arrow arum, is shown in a dramatic large format compared to most DeKay botanicals. It is a rare foldout from this series of books that faithfully recorded beautiful and original illustrations of plants, animals, fish, reptiles and mollusks native to the state. Of the entire print run, only 300 special sets were set aside to have the plates hand-colored. This example is an actual plate from one of those 300 special sets. Lovely example with no faults. 9 x 15.5 image on 11.5 x 18.5 sheet.
