Item Details
Description
Eastern Europe, Russia, St. Petersburg, Imperial Period, ca. 1882 to 1899 CE. A charming container of a rounded form with tripodal feet. This high-quality silver storage box is decorated with stunning enamel cloisonne on the exterior of the lid and body. The container rests on leafy, scrolling legs with rounded feet. The underside of the vessel is stamped with a faint maker's mark within a square and a silver purity mark; an "84" with a crossed anchor and grapnel shape, that represents the town mark of St. Petersburg. The lid opens by sliding horizontally on a small hinge, and the interior is concave. The cloisonne features flowers and scrolling vine shapes in hues of white, red, and green on a blue ground. The supporting feet and rounded shape are very reminiscent of the famous eggs created by Faberge! An adorable piece suitable for holding a petite piece of jewelry or other precious treasures! Size: 1.75" W x 2" H (4.4 cm x 5.1 cm); quality of silver: 92.6% to 96.6%; total weight: 95.8 grams

Provenance: ex-collection of James Farmer, Maryland, collected from major galleries and auction houses between 1995 and 2005
