President John Tyler Beautifully Signed Partial Letter
1 partial page, front and back, measuring 7.5" x 2.5", Williamsburg, dated December 19, 1838. Boldly signed "John Tyler" and addressed to an unknown recipient. The letter has been clipped so that only be beginning and the end of the letter remains. It reads in part: "Ellis's resignation has taken us much by surprise and we have in the [illegible]…keep me well-advised during the winter, of all that may be interesting." With flattened mail folds, light toning, and soiling. Adhesive residue at the edges of the front page. Boldly signed.
John Tyler (1790-1862) was the 10th president of the U.S., serving from 1841 to 1845. Tyler had briefly served as vice president under William Henry Harrison but rose to the presidency after Harrison's death just one month into office. At the time this letter was composed, Tyler had successfully been elected to the House of Delegates and had become a national political figure.
