Description
Ancient Near East, Iran, Parthian, ca. 2nd century CE. A rare and intact example of a wheel-thrown pottery jug with a flat base, a broad piriform body with a tapered shoulder, a corseted neck, and a squat rim in front of an arching handle. The body exhibits several horizontal grooves formed during the wheel-throwing process and presents with a faint layer of dark yellow glaze. The relatively narrow mouth suggests this jug was used for storing liquids or substances that were poured or used more sparingly than wine or oil. The surfaces are covered almost completely with attractive layers of rainbow-hued glaze that imbues the jug with a sumptuous presentation. Size: 5.5" W x 8.875" H (14 cm x 22.5 cm)
