Description
Assembled by T. Leonard Sangston, McClellandtown, Pennsylvania, 20th century. Includes an ox and cart (with rider), two fancy camels (with riders), and a pair of show horses (with multiple riders). The fancy camels are 10.5" high. Sangston was a funeral director in the small, southwestern Pennsylvania town, and a very prominent citizen. He was also passionate about circuses, and was a member of numerous model circus clubs. What is here represents between one-third to one-half of the large model circus he carved, painted, and displayed in his McClellandtown home. The carvers for the Sangston Brothers Circus include Jean LeRoy (MI/AZ, d. 1982), who carved the figures, and Frank Updegrove (PA, act. mid-20th century), who carved many of the horses. Provenance: Tom and Carolyn Porter, sold piecemeal as part of their toy collection at Garth’s in January 1986. This lot is eligible for pick-up or in-house shipping. Please contact us for a quote.
