Item Details
Description
The circular block with rolled top and bottom edges, rounded side notch and three openings polished inside from the ship's rigging ropes that it gathered. Similar to a dead-eye, this would have been seized to a shroud to lead ropes to their correct place on the pin rail of a masted, wind driven ship. Gathering the buntlines, clewlines and leech lines this way meant that they could be readily found and adjusted on even the darkest of nights.
The wood Lignum Vitae is legendary for a number of medicinal reasons and for its hardness and waterproof qualities. It has been used to construct bearings in nuclear submarines as well as pulleys, shafts, axles, and bowling balls. For centuries, teas and medicines derived from it have been used to treat arthritis, coughs, tonsillitis and more.
Measures 2.5 x 5.25 x 5 inches.
Provenance: The Paul Vardeman Marine Antiques Collection.
We happily provide seamless in-house packing and shipping services on nearly everything we sell.
