Description
The sharp example of an armed barque with exceptional craftsmanship, painting, color and craftsmanship depicted in great detail on a rolling sea with an American flag flying. This appears to be a transitional ship powered by steam and wind both. But a pencil inscription back side reads USS Plymouth 1878.
Measures 19.75 x 31 x 4.5 inches.

GEORGE AND THE DRAGON (Dated 1698) The dramatic figure of a writhing dragon covered in approximately 1000 individually applied ivory scales set with a carved dog-like head complete with large nose holes, the tongue is scrimmed with cyrillic characters and a date of 1698, the two graceful and attractively carved wings are applied to the scaly body, the dragon figure is raised on four carved legs with detailed paw feet and claws. The solid head, wings and feet are of the same creamy color and very similar in style of carving whereas the tail is a slightly different color and carved in a technique that does not match other elements.
The carved figure of St. George is depicted with lance astride the dragon wearing the garb and battle readiness of a Diocletian soldier having detail that includes acanthus-like swirls on the helmet, lion masks on the shoulder plates and exceptional facial detail. Measures 12 x 18 x 6 inches.
