Das heutige Königreich Kuba ist eine von der Herrscherschicht Bushong dominierte Konföderation von rund zwanzig Ethnien mit gemeinsamer Bantu-Abstammung.

Der Name Kuba kommt aus der Bantu-Sprache und bedeutet dort "Wurfmesser". Die ca. 250'000 Menschen zählende Gruppe des Kuba-Stammeskomplexes umfasst u. a. die Bushoong, Kete, Tetela, Ngeende, Lele, Binji, und Shoowa.

Die Kuba hegen eine spezielle Vorliebe für geometrische Formen und sind in erster Linie für ihre kunstvoll abstrakt gestalteten Textilien berühmt. Aber auch alle anderen Gegenstände ihres Gebrauchs wurden gerne über und über mit feinsten Mustern versehen.

Bei diesem fein gestalteten Gefäss handelt es sich wohl um einen sogenannten „Vertrauens- oder Freundschaftsbecher“.

Bei Zeremonien kamen die Initiierten zusammen und tranken nach vorgeschriebenen Regeln Palmwein. Die verschiedenen Formen der Becher gaben Auskunft über den Initiationsgrad der Mitglieder.
