Description
Spanish Colonial Retablo. San Miguel (St. Michael the Archangel), 19th c. Mexico, oil on tin. San Miguel, one of three archangels mentioned in Scripture, was a popular figure in Baroque iconography. In Revelation 12:7-9, Michael is the Captain General of the heavenly hosts of angels who did battle against and conquered Satan and his legions. Hence, Michael is venerated as the protector of the Church Militant. In this capacity, he represented the triumph of the Church over heresy and, by extension, the militancy of Spanish Catholicism. The text on the retablo (Quis ut Deus) refers to the meaning of the name Michael (like unto God). In art, Michael is portrayed, as here, as a handsome young soldier vanquishing Satan. Michael is commemorated with the other two archangels on September 29. Provenance: Saint Joseph's University. Size: 12.25'' x 8.25'', 31 x 21 cm (sight); 16.5'' x 12.5'', 42 x 32 cm (frame). Note: There Are No Hidden or Confidential Reserves in this Auction; All Acceptable Bidding Commences at the Online Start Price.
