Rare Ceremonial Pua Sungkit (ulu ai), hand spun cotton, supplementary weft wrapping, Iban People, Borneo, late 19th/early 20th c. Such textiles played an important role in headhunting ceremonies. The heads of killed people were wrapped in such cloths prior to mummification which was performed later. The sungkit weaving process is now extinct. Size: 75'' x 24'' (191 x 61 cm).
